The Blurb: December 2007
Everyone's doing it
Tuesday 25 December 2007 12.37 pm

... so why don't I jump on the veritable bandwagon and wish you a happy Christmas?
Happy Christmas!
We opened our presents as a family in Toad Hall this year. (Those not familiar with Lee Abbey just nod and smile as if you understood. It's the name of my charming little two-room detached.)
Anyone else get one of those little "20-questions" electronic things? They're incredible. My friend's one didn't get "unicycle" or "magic wand" though.
Have a great day, and don't forget Jesus in it all! Hmmm ... I wonder whether the 20 questions thingy would get "Jesus"...

A truly royal name
Friday 21 December 2007 6.31 pm

I hear on the grapevine (oh, all right, the BBC) that Ed and Soph, who visited us at Lee Abbey in 2005 (here endeth the name-dropping), have had a son. And they called him ... wait for it ... Viscount Severn James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor.
I take it that's only his pet name. When you're a naughty boy, usually your exasperated parents call you by your full name, don't they? This ought to be interesting - I can imagine it now... "Oi, Viscount Severn James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor ... stop pulling Lady Louise's hair this instant! And eat all your peas."

Revue of the Year
Thursday 20 December 2007 11.18 pm

The second-last Revue rehearsal is done; the guests arrive at Lee Abbey tomorrow for Christmas (including my whole family!) and we're about to get going. For anyone joining us, this exclusive Revue Prevue photo gallery on Facebook should whet your appetite.
There are also two more cartoons in the Cartoon Gallery with a very loose Christmas feel...

Community Christmas
Tuesday 18 December 2007 11.55 pm

It's that time of year again! In the week before Christmas, we have several traditions as a Community. First, we go up to the glade in the woods, have soup, observe the cutting of the Christmas tree, and take a Community photo (pictured). That was Sunday.
Next, we have a free shopping trip to Exeter and our first of four (count 'em) Christmas dinners at the Station Inn, Blackmoor Gate. This great occasion happened on Monday.
After that comes the Christmas party, the second Christmas dinner, much blowing of coloured balls around the Dining Room, silliness, posh dress and dancing in the Octag. That has just finished tonight.
Finally after that lot we have a Quiet Day (tomorrow) with a few hours' silence (oh yes) to prepare us for the arrival of our Christmas guests on Friday.
This year's Community events have shown a fabulous Community spirit - the best I've seen in four years. It's a great time to be a Lee Abbey Community member!

Friendly tuna
Thursday 13 December 2007 9.52 pm

I present to you such wonders as you have never seen. This salad contains (and I quote) "Pasta Mix, Carrot & Iceberg Lettuce with Dolphin". What, whole dolphin? That's a truly rare and special salad.
There's more. It also contains (I continue to quote) "Friendly Tuna" (as opposed to the vicious kind), and as a final flourish, "Free Range French Style Mayonnaise". Isn't it great to know that the mayonnaise was allowed to roam wild and free before it was captured and forced to live forever in a plastic package with a mild-mannered tuna and a large aquatic mammal?
Credit for the finding of this gem goes to my new Marketing Manager office colleague Terry. We're getting on very well in the newly-expanded Publicity & Marketing Team (PMT) since he joined in November. Of course I'm not at Lee Abbey much longer myself; I'm looking to move on at the end of January. I'm investigating various options in graphic/Web design and publicity and would appreciate your prayers...
Other updates: There is a new cartoon in the Cartoon Gallery. There have been several in the last few weeks so if you haven't looked for a while it might be worth having a peek. :o)

The end of the world is nigh
Friday 7 December 2007 5.59 pm

In 2008, to be precise. How do I know? Because Ronald (not McDonald) says so on his website. No seriously, this time it's true. Honestly. Read all about it at the Official End-of-the-World website if you don't believe me. You can even download a free book.

I love night walks
Sunday 2 December 2007 12.35 pm

Facebook devotees who are friends of mine will already have noticed that during my uneventful three-hour Reception shift this morning, I started a new group over there as a way of furthering my passion for walking at night.
If you're a Facebook member, even if you're not my friend, and you like night walks too, why not join the group? The group has only existed for 3½ hours so it's early days yet, but it already has 17 members. Hopefully soon people will begin posting stories of night walks they have enjoyed and ridiculous night walks they have endured.
I love night walks.
