The Blurb: October 2007

The year's mammoth job completed

Sunday 28 October 2007  4.51 pm

Finally, after working on this thing (on and off) for the last two months, it's great to be able to say that the 2008-09 Lee Abbey brochure is at last complete!  It was uploaded to the FTP servers of our local printers, TopTown, this afternoon.

I have many duties in the Publicity & Marketing Team (PMT) here at Lee Abbey, of which the annual brochure is the biggest, possibly most stressful, but definitely most satisfying, one.  This will have been my third and last brochure during my three years on Community.  I'm due to leave in January.

The printing and mailing process will now take about four weeks, so expect to see this one towards the end of November...

The Blue Ball Inn

Thursday 25 October 2007  6.09 pm

It's the end of an era.  (Or as I just typo'd that, the end of an ear.)

The Sandpiper Inn, quite a nice public house just the other side of Lynmouth, frequented by Lee Abbey Community members for as long as anyone can remember, has changed its name.

That's right - there is no more Sandpiper.  There is now the Blue Ball Inn.  We went there with our small group (life group) last night, and it was still the refreshingly familiar place inside, which is nice.  Some things never change.  And apparently the Sandpiper used to be called the Blue Ball years ago anyway.  So there you go.

Note: the accompanying picture was not taken at the Blue Ball Inn, or indeed even taken in the UK.  It was from my clipart collection.  But at least it's a blue ball.

A great weekend for English sport

Monday 22 October 2007  7.35 pm

So England lost the football, and may no longer qualify for Euro 2008.  England lost the rugby and are now only the second best team in the entire world.  And England, through Lewis Hamilton, lost the Grand Prix.  Lewis is now, by 1 point, only the second best F1 driver in the entire world this season.

It's a hard life, isn't it?

It's been quite a good weekend for me though.  My 19th (and last?) Host Team at Lee Abbey went swimmingly!  Erm, even the baptism - in the sea.

So it's the big game tonight.

Saturday 20 October 2007  11.29 am

England are playing South Africa in the Rugby World Cup Final!  This is most exciting.  Even people like me who don't know one end of a rugby ball from another (the one pictured is called Gilbert, apparently), get sort of interested when England makes it this far in something.  I have to ensure arrangements are made for our guests to watch it too.

Of course, my loyalties are divided slightly.  I did live seven and a half of my first eight years in South Africa.  So actually I don't really mind who wins.  It might be nice if England gets two in a row though!

I'm also watching out for that Grand Prix tomorrow.  What will the weekend bring for Britain?

For guests' eyes only

Wednesday 10 October 2007  5.53 pm

It comes to all famous comedians eventually.  And to me, as well.  Last night I committed a slight faux pas as I performed my now-regular "Introduction to Lee Abbey" comedy cartoon presentation to the guests at our entertainment evening.

As the sequence progressed, I did happen to notice that a few slides were not in the order they should have been, but I brushed it off and proceeded regardless.  The highly unreliable remote was providing extra fun too. :o)

It was only when I got to the slide about how long it takes guests to eat lunch, especially when they have oranges to peel, that I realised the error: I was using the presentation designed for the Past Community Weekend on 15 September - not the censored guest version!

Well, the guests had a good laugh.  So did the Community members out the back. :oD

Don't panic - wine gums are back

Thursday 4 October 2007  7.48 pm

Were you aware they had gone?  I was, and I know at least one other person was!  Wine gums last Saturday returned to the Lee Abbey Sweetie Store shelves after a two-month absence caused by the flooding of the wine gum factory in Sheffield back in July.  Trebor mints were also affected.

Larger bags of wine gums have been available since the floods (presumably more were made) but rolls quickly disappeared from shop shelves up and down the land.  Some shops haven't got them back in yet.  But we have, and we are happy about this. :o)

On a slightly less trivial note, my brother's world record (below) was in The Times on Monday.  This is very exciting!
