Judas

Friday 23 March 2007  7.05 pm

My friends tell me this isn't typecasting!  In this year's Easter drama at Lee Abbey (which for the first time is to abandon the first-century dress for modern costume), I have been cast as Judas Iscariot, the one who betrays Jesus.

I was a little surprised to be asked but actually I'm really looking forward to this!  I've never (I don't think...) played a 'bad guy' before.  Also, if people think I'm 'too nice' to play Judas, surely that just creates another interesting question: was Judas really an evil person or was he perhaps the last person anyone would have expected to hand Jesus over to death?

I don't know the answer to that.  Just a thought.

They come, they go...

Friday 9 March 2007  9.20 pm

In the Lee Abbey Community, people are always arriving and leaving.  Someone leaves or joins most weeks.  This picture is the Community in October 2004, and 80% of these people no longer live here.  I've been a Community member for 2 years and 9 months and in that time have seen over 200 people come and go.

What's scary for me is just how easily they do.  Often I find myself wondering why I don't get more emotional when someone who's lived with me for months or even years, departs for ever.  "They come, they go," says Finance Director Steve, who has been here eight years and makes a point of never mourning anyone.  I have to say, his attitude is tempting for someone who's been here a while.  You can get numb after a bit.

Just for the record, this isn't always the case.  This week I've actually been quite glad to discover that I do, after all, have the capacity to get close enough to people that I miss them very much when they go.  Rare people whose memory at LA and in me lasts longer than 24 hours after their leaving circle.

But in this case, I'm pleased to say, my friend hasn't gone for ever.

Total Lunacy

Sunday 4 March 2007  9.24 am

Along with billions of others last night, I went out to look at the total lunar eclipse, where the Earth's shadow covers the moon and turns it deep red (Joel 2:31).  An amazing sight, isn't it?!  This mediochre image was the best I got of it, using a tripod and 15-second exposure.  I'm sure others got better ones, but it shows the colour nicely.

However, I have a bone to pick with the BBC.  In their article on this eclipse, they say that is "the first total lunar eclipse in more than three years".  This is emphatically not true.  I distinctly remember dancing the cha-cha with a Romanian at the Crosses at 3am during the last one, 28 October 2004.  It's not something you forget. :o)

Quarter Century

Thursday 1 March 2007  11.32 am

On the official first day of Spring according to the Met Office, I have now hit the milestone age of 25.  And I'm having a great day already - this is the first time my pigeon hole has actually been full and I feel so loved.

Now, if the Devon weather holds off long enough, I shall be going out for a nice lunch and afternoon stroll with a friend.  Looking forward to that. :o)
