The Blurb: December 2006

First night, star-bright...

Monday 25 December 2006  6.19 pm

I watched this video just before Christmas, and it's been going round in my head ever since.  This is Cliff Richard with the cheesiest Christmas song ever.  See if you can stop singing it yourself once you hear it.  Annoy all your friends!

Happy Christmas

Friday 22 December 2006  8.53 pm

OK, so I haven't sent out my Christmas cards, and am now deciding whether I should send them anyway as New Year cards.  I haven't yet wrapped, or even bought, all my Christmas presents, but at least I know exactly what I'm going to get, and I can get them here at Lee Abbey tomorrow.

But I have prepared for Christmas in most other ways!  I'm almost ready to perform in our Christmas Revue on 27 December, which is (highly topically) based in an airport when a suspicious package grounds all the flights.  We knew nothing about the fog at Heathrow as we rehearsed it weeks ago.

And I'm also going to Bath with my family (so to speak) for 4 days from tomorrow evening.  I've had a great Community Christmas run-up, but now that our Christmas guests have arrived, I'm off.  Not that I'm avoiding them or anything.

Happy Christmas, one and all, even if you don't have a card from me!

You wait 16 months for a boss...

Sunday 17 December 2006  10.22 pm

... and two come along at once.  This weekend we have just interviewed a candidate for the Marketing Manager position, and we interview another from tomorrow to Thursday.  My team of one may shortly become a team of two again!

Your prayers for wisdom would be appreciated.  This is both exciting and slightly strange for me; I'm not the decision maker but my opinions will certainly count, and I'm a little nervous about how I will adjust to working in a team again.  But I'm extremely keen for us to make God's appointment here - even if that is neither of these.

In other news: it's Community Christmas week now, with guests due to arrive on Thursday.  Today we had the cutting-of-the-tree ceremony in the forest (it rained, for the first time any of us can remember), tomorrow we have a Community shopping trip to Exeter, and on Tuesday it's the Christmas party.

Also today, we had a run-through of the Christmas Revue which is shaping up to be the best, and funniest, Revue I have seen by quite a long way.  And I don't say that lightly. :o)

Why Christmas shopping is so hard

Sunday 10 December 2006  5.08 pm

I've cracked it!  I've finally realised why it is that every year I'm still shopping at the last minute!  I did it again today, on our Community trip to the Bath Christmas Market on Saturday (suitably festive image of Bath Abbey pictured).

Everywhere I went I would see things that might do for presents for people but each fitted into one of the following categories: (a) too expensive; (b) too cheap; (c) they probably already have one; (d) they might not take it the way I mean it; (e) do they really like X that much; (f) too obvious - someone else will buy it for them; (g) I haven't got time to make a proper decision!

Sad isn't it?  At least now I know why Christmas shopping is so difficult.  It's because I'm so stubborn.  I wait until the day before Christmas for the perfect present idea to come along, and by the time I have given up on the perfect idea, even the good ones are no longer possible in the time available.

There is still time.  This year could be different.  And anyway, the six of us who went had a fabulous day in Bath apart from that little thing! :o)

Promotions Office back to normal

Saturday 2 December 2006  12.02 pm

Those living with me and those following my progress recently will note how busy the last few weeks have been, with a new Lee Abbey brochure and issue of the Lee Abbey thrice-yearly magazine Rapport to produce in the same time-frame.

Both are now done, and I am currently enjoying a nice weekend break in Bath with my parents.  It's such a relief!

Of course there will be more to do when I get back - updating the website, producing some press ads and preparing for our next exhibition in January.  The House may be closed to guests from now until Christmas, but the work in Promotions goes on.  Still, it won't be the high-intensity late-night work that has characterised recent days.  It was an exciting challenge, but I'm ready to rest from that now!
